Hokutoryu for juniors

Hokutoryu Junior Ju-Jutsu is suitable for the children at the age of 7-14. All dangerous ju-jutsu techniques are removed. In Junior Ju-Jutsu there are no strangle/choke techniques, neck nor backbone locks, or weapon/armed techniques.

The intention is to create good basic skills for the future training (i.a. good coordination, muscle condition, stretchability).

Junior syllabus and belt system is different than adult´s. Junior grades (mons) are; white, yellow, orange, green, blue and brown. Every grade is also divided into two parts (interval grades).

Belt is always white with long grade coloured stripe from beginning to end. Interval grades are marked on one top of the belt as stripes.

Competition system for junior fighters

Hokutoryu Ju-Jutsu fights are conducted under full-contact rules. Permitted techniques include strikes, kicks, throws and takedowns. Allowed locks and chokes are determined according to age in categories for competitors under 18: in the junior category (ages 7–13), only a straight arm lock (juji gatame) is allowed; in the cadet category (ages 14–15), all locks permitted by the rules are allowed; in the youth category (ages 16–17), chokes are permitted in addition to locks. Striking to the head is prohibited.

The competition uniform is a ju-jutsugi. For competitors under 18, mandatory protective gear includes a mouthguard, karate shin guards, groin protection for boys, and chest protection for girls aged 14 and older. Match duration is 2 × 2 minutes, and a match can be won by the opponent’s submission or by the referee’s decision. More information on junior match rules can be found here.
